Women of Kandahar, Afghanistan Unite for Peace

February 29, 2008 -- At 10 am on March 8th, International Women's Day, thousands of women from across Afghanistan will raise their voices in peace for peace.
In Kandahar, the most violent Province in Afghanistan, women are mobilizing because they are tired of watching their sons, daughters, husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters killed in senseless acts of violence. The peace gathering began with a bold idea that caught on and spread quickly among the women of Kandahar. They have lost their patience and demand peace now.
Women from Kabul and every other province in Afghanistan are celebrating International Women’s Day. At these gatherings they will read a message of peace in support of the brave women of Kandahar. Afghan women are standing side by side, their voices ringing out in solidarity.
In Kandahar women will be wearing white scarves as a symbol of peace and declaring “we want peace now.” These women are calling on citizens from around the world to support their cause as they gather for peace on March 8th at 10 am.
The women in Kandahar will sign a petition of peace to be presented to President Karzai, the United Nations and other pertinent national and international organizations in Afghanistan.
Since 2001, over 5000 innocent civilian lives have been lost in Afghanistan. Afghan women want an end to the violence and stop the killing of Afghans! They want a peaceful future for their children. On March 8th the women of Afghanistan will raise a unified voice for peace.
